Poker in the Media

Poker is a lot of things to a lot of people and while it’s an immensely huge world unto itself rarely does it garner the media attention of the news industry in the mainstream world. Maybe that’s all for the best, attention from the rest of the world as a whole usually ends up as negative press for a lot of organizations. As a general rule good news does not sell, not nearly as well anyway.

The tournament poker world itself is very good about its coverage of news, there a multitude of websites dedicated to sharing the latest tournament standings, rankings and venues throughout the world. Pokernews.com is a huge site dedicated to the poker world at large with up to date news not only from the poker community, but twitter feeds from all the major players and blogs to go along with them. They also offer live reports online of some of the major tournaments around the world. This site is a media extravaganza for the players, fans and community as a whole.

There are a plethora of websites dedicated to the coverage of poker news; television coverage is growing at an alarming rate. There are also a few magazines dedicated to the game. Bluff magazine is available in both print and digital form. Card Player magazine is the oldest Poker magazine in existence and is available for purchase every two weeks. Two plus Two is perhaps the best known magazine right now, but it is solely digitally based. Living in a digital world as we do today its popularity is understandable. There are even a number of poker radio shows to speak of although they are all in form of podcasts and or online radio. Even so this is a testimony to poker in the media that this game has spawned such a following as to create all of these different media types to cover its happenings.

What does happen in the world series of poker such as tournaments and charity events goes quite unnoticed by the workaday world. So I find it the job of not only the dedicated online community but also small article writers to bring forth the news of and about the poker community to everyone. So what I am going to leave you with is a rather upbeat note. There is a very large poker tournament being held in Montreal Quebec, it’s a charity tournament and has been held these six years past.

The tournament is called the 6th annual Fulltilt Poker Miriam Foundation Montreal Open. It happens to be the largest charity poker tournament in all of Canada and will be expecting around 1300 players sitting at tables to begin the opening round. Not a bad showing for any tournament in anyone’s book. The charity proceeds will go to support the Miriam Foundation. This is a non-profit foundation which supports rehabilitative, residential and vocational services for adults and children living with autism or other intellectual disabilities. This tournament is being held at the end of March from the 27th to the 30th at the Windsor Hotel. There you have it, positive news from the poker world in mainstream media. Score one for the good guys.
